We're on a mission: make Penmate the best AI grading tool for English teachers. Not "good enough." Not "competitive." The best.
That means obsessing over details most software companies ignore. It means shipping 40+ improvements in a single month because each one matters. It means testing AI detection with real teachers before we roll it out, because getting this wrong would be irresponsible.
October was intense. This is our first product development update, and we're doing it differently than typical tech companies. No vague promises about "innovation." Instead, concrete features that solve real problems—backed by the hours they save you and the frustration they eliminate.
We're working on two fronts: core AI capabilities that make grading smarter and more reliable, and quality of life improvements that save you and your students hours every week.
Here's everything we built, why it matters, and what's coming next.
Core AI: Two Breakthroughs in Student Work Analysis
1. Enhanced AI Detection: Transparent, Ethical, Reliable (Rolling Out in November)
Students use ChatGPT. You need to know, but you need to know responsibly. That's why we built significantly enhanced AI detection capabilities that combine statistical text analysis with behavioral analysis of how students write. You get transparent probability metrics—not binary "guilty or innocent" verdicts.
The system analyzes both the final text and the writing process itself. Statistical analysis examines the text characteristics while behavioral tracking reveals how the work was actually created—tracking patterns like pasted paragraphs or suspicious typing behaviors that might indicate AI assistance.
We're currently testing this with select organizations to ensure accuracy and reliability. Throughout November, we're rolling it out to all Penmate users.
We built ethical safeguards into the system because this is sensitive territory. The goal isn't gotcha moments. It's informed conversations about academic integrity. You get clear metrics alongside your CEFR evaluation, helping you understand the likelihood of AI assistance without making absolute judgments.
Stop agonizing over "did they write this?" Detailed metrics give you confidence in 30 seconds instead of 30 minutes of detective work.
2. Automatic Overnight Evaluation: Wake Up to Graded Work
You assign essays on Monday. Students submit throughout the week. You spend your weekend grading. We built automatic evaluation that runs overnight while you sleep. The system analyzes submitted work during off-peak hours, intelligently managing credits and handling edge cases.
This feature works hand-in-hand with our timezone improvements. Your organization's timezone setting determines exactly when "overnight" means—ensuring work gets evaluated at the right time for your location, not ours.
Students submit their work by the deadline. You wake up the next morning with preliminary analysis waiting. No manual triggering. No waiting around.
Eliminate all waiting time for batch analysis. Start your day with insights, not with busywork.
Quality of Life: Features That Save Hours Every Week
For Teachers: Tools That Respect Your Time
Teaching is demanding enough without software adding to your workload. We shipped several features in October designed to handle the administrative tasks that drain your time and energy.
Flexible deadline management now lets you edit deadlines for entire work groups or individual students. When a student needs an extension, you can adjust their deadline without affecting the whole class. Set deadlines with confidence—the system now respects your timezone exactly.
Need more credits? The new credit request system lets you request them directly in the application with transparent billing validation. No more back-and-forth with support emails.
Students now automatically receive emails when Penmate evaluated their work. This eliminates the endless "did you grade my essay?" questions in class. The notification goes out as soon as evaluation is complete, keeping students informed without any effort on your part.
We completely overhauled timezone handling. Your organization automatically gets the correct timezone based on country selection.
For Students: Making Submission Actually Pleasant
Students lose work when browsers crash. They struggle with word limits. They get distracted by cluttered interfaces. We fixed all of that in October.
Auto-save with draft status means no more "my browser crashed and I lost everything" panic. Everything saves automatically, always. Students can close their browser and come back later—their work is safe.
The visual word counter turns green when students are within limits and red when they exceed them. No more guessing and manual counting. Simple visual feedback helps students stay on track without interrupting their writing flow.
Fullscreen mode provides distraction-free writing. Just the student and their essay. No sidebars, no menus—pure focus on their ideas and words. Students can immerse themselves in their writing without visual clutter competing for attention.
We redesigned the complete submission experience for phones and tablets. Students write where they're comfortable, whether that's on a laptop in the library or a phone on the bus. The interface adapts seamlessly to any screen size.
When students submit work, confetti explodes on screen. It's a tiny celebration that acknowledges effort. Students love this moment—it transforms submission from a chore into an achievement. This small touch of joy makes a difference in how students feel about their work.
Behind the Scenes: Infrastructure for Reliability
While you don't see these improvements directly, they make everything more reliable.
We built a feature flags system that lets us roll out new features gradually to specific organizations. This means we can innovate faster without risking your classroom stability. Enhanced AI detection? We tested it thoroughly with select schools before broader rollout.
October by the Numbers
We shipped 40+ features and fixes in October. Automatic overnight evaluation now handles all submitted work. Auto-save implementation achieved zero data loss. The new timezone system delivers 100% accuracy. Major AI detection improvements are in testing with select organizations.
What We Learned: Software for Teachers Is Different
Every October feature came from teacher feedback or watching how you use Penmate.
Building for teachers is humbling. You're incredibly busy, resource-constrained, and working with real humans who deserve better than buggy software.
We're obsessed with making Penmate best-in-class because you deserve tools that respect your expertise and amplify your impact. You shouldn't spend hours on administrative busywork. You should spend time doing what only humans can do: inspiring students to think critically and express themselves clearly.
November Preview: Your Most-Requested Features
October laid the groundwork. November brings the features you've been asking for.
Freestyle Mode: Create Your Own Assignments
This is our most-requested feature, and it's finally coming.
Right now, Penmate evaluates student writing based on standard CEFR criteria. That's powerful, but it's not enough. You know your curriculum. You know what skills your students need to practice. You should be able to create custom assignments that reflect your teaching goals.
Freestyle Mode lets you design your own tasks with custom evaluation criteria. Teaching persuasive writing? Create a task focused on argumentation and rhetorical devices. Working on creative fiction? Design criteria for character development and narrative structure.
Your expertise. Our AI. Unlimited possibilities.
Student Portal: One Place for All Their Work
Students are currently navigating submissions through individual task links. That works, but it's not ideal.
The Student Portal gives each student a centralized dashboard showing all their assignments, deadlines, submitted work, and feedback. They can track their progress over time, see their improvement, and never miss a deadline.
Everything in one place. Simple. Clear. Motivating.
Enhanced AI Detection Rollout
The AI detection capabilities we've been testing with select schools roll out to everyone in November. You'll get transparent, ethical tools for identifying AI-assisted work.
The Bottom Line
AI will transform education. The question is whether teachers get tools worthy of their profession.
We're building one of those tools. October's 40+ updates prove we're not slowing down. Every week brings faster grading, more consistency, and deeper insights.
November brings Freestyle Mode and Student Portal—the features that will change how you use Penmate completely.
If you're on Penmate's free tier, these improvements show where we're headed. We're committed to making this the tool you can't imagine teaching without.
If you're already a paying customer, thank you for trusting us. Your feedback shapes every feature we build. Freestyle Mode? That's happening because you told us what you needed.
Try the new features. Tell us what works and what doesn't.
